Hydrocyclone is a device for separating and removing heavy coarse particles, mud and sand from sewage. Sometimes it is also used for mud dehydration.
Hydrocyclone Use
Use of high performance shakers reduces the drilled solids loading on the hydrocyclones. However, during the drilling of large diameter holes, high penetration rates and high flow rates (greater than 50 feet/hour), 10" or 12" hydrocyclones are recommended to reduce solids loading on the smaller hydrocyclones. There should be sufficient 10" or 12" cones to process 110% of the mud circulating flow rate normally only water based muds.
The next type of solids removal equipment, downstream of the shakers or large hydrocyclones, are usually 4" desilters, which may be followed by 2" or 2" microcones. The 3" hydrocyclones may be used for replacements of the 4" units, based on fine screening (<175m) ahead of the cyclones.
